CASH Golden Sail Award Winner Pui-shan Cheung’s Cross-Media Chamber Opera, “Qixi”
Following her award-winning cross-media chamber opera “Lotus Script” composer Pui-shan Cheung presents her second chamber opera, “Qixi”. Once again, she beautifully explores the themes of women and traditional culture.
A Magical Mix of Art and Technology
“Qixi” brings together music, theatre, dance, and digital art to bring a fading Cantonese tradition—the "Seven Sisters Festival" (Chinese Valentine's Day)—back to life. The show features a soprano, a mezzo-soprano, two dancers, and a mixed Western and Chinese ensemble with traditional Cantonese opera percussion, combined with modern sound and media technology.
Two Different Love Stories Across Time
The story travels between the past and the present, following two women from different eras searching for love: “Purple Love” explores the classic feelings of a woman in the 1960s, and “Bobo Falls for an AI Man” tells a funny, modern 21st-century fantasy about a girl falling in love with artificial intelligence.
Like a needle and thread, “Qixi” stitches together the hearts of past and modern women. It brings us the ultimate wish of the festival: may all our lives, dreams, and hearts be complete and filled with love.
